Tadka-taaza Pizza Pig-out!

If the Duncan-Edwards, the Wahls and the Silversteins had anything to do with it, we’d all be living like Princes and Princesses, wolfing down  pizzas in the mornings, and fried eggs and boysenberries at nights. We’d be falling up and getting down, with runny babbits and Prince Proudfoots. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s fall back up into reality and close our eyes for just a moment. Even a fraction of a fleeting moment should suffice, really, to make you drool silly as you imagine yourself pigging out on a Supreme smack in the middle of a workday morning..replete with its crunchy peppers, fleshy mushrooms, crispy pepperoni, juicy olives and rich, gooey cheese on top. Now that you’re all prepped and primed up, join the Tadka gals on this piquant pizza pig-out!

Update: This post was part of an April fool’s day prank — the “pizza” in the photographs is technically a giant cookie smeared with strawberry jam and topped with colored fondant cut-outs..drizzled with melted white chocolate!

The recipe that follows was conjured up to accompany the hoax and although it may produce a look-alike result, it has not been tested in the Tadka kitchens.

Tadka-Taaza Pizza

(Serves 3-4)

1 Store-bought thin crust pizza base

1 Cup pizza sauce

1 Cup coarsely grated mozzarella cheese

1/4 Cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Toppings, choose from –

  • 1 Green capsicum, sliced into semi-circles
  • 1 Onion, sliced into half-moons
  • 3 Button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/4 Cup cooked sausage
  • 6-8 Slices pepperoni
  • 1 Tablespoon sliced kalamata olives

Tadka –

  • 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ Teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Generous pinch of aesafoetida
  • 2 green chillies, minced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced

Lightly brush the vegetables with olive oil and grill outdoors, or in your handy grill pan until partly cooked and attractively streaked. Evenly spread the tomato sauce on the pizza base, leaving a quarter inch border. Dot the pizza with a few selected toppings, or all of them, if you prefer. Sprinkle the mozzarella on top and bake in a 350F/180C oven for 15-20 minutes until the pizza is heated through and the cheese is melted.

Heat the oil in a saute pan and let the tadka ingredients exude their flavors into it. Carefully top the pizza with the sizzling, spiced oil. Cut into wedges and pig-out, with nary a care for your weekday morning or your LDL count. A little indulgence never hurt a Prince or a Princess..
